Navigating Virginia's Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system can be complex. To assist, here's an overview:

Understanding the Virginia EBT Card
The Virginia EBT Card functions similarly to a debit or credit card, loaded with food stamps and/or cash benefits. It's accepted at authorized stores. Upon approval for benefits, you'll receive this card. For assistance, contact Virginia's EBT customer service at 1-866-281-2448.
Applying for Food Stamps
The most straightforward method to apply for food stamps is online through the CommonHelp portal. Alternatively, you can apply in person by reaching out to your local Department of Social Services (DSS) office or calling the Virginia SNAP hotline at 1-800-552-3431.
Renewing Your Food Stamps
It's crucial to renew your food stamps before your certification period ends, which typically ranges from 6 to 12 months for most Virginia households. Confirm your specific certification period with your caseworker. You'll receive a letter in the mail when it's time to reapply.
EBT Deposit Schedule
Benefits are distributed from the 1st to the 7th of every month, based on the last digit of your case number:
Case numbers ending in 0-3: Benefits available on the 1st of the month.
Case numbers ending in 4-5: Benefits available on the 4th of the month.
Case numbers ending in 6-9: Benefits available on the 7th of the month.
Reporting Changes
To report changes such as income adjustments, household size, or address updates, contact your local DSS office or call the Virginia SNAP hotline at 1-800-552-3431. You can also report changes online through your CommonHelp account.
Replacing a Lost or Stolen EBT Card
If your EBT card is lost or stolen, immediately call the Virginia EBT customer service at 1-866-281-2448 to report it and request a replacement. Your state may require you to change your PIN, report your card stolen, and/or request a new card.
Reimbursing Stolen SNAP Benefits
If your benefits were electronically stolen (e.g., through skimming or phishing) in or after October 2022, you may be eligible to apply for reimbursement. Call the Virginia EBT hotline number at 1-866-281-2448 to learn more about your state's process.
Additional Benefits
Beyond SNAP, Virginia offers programs like WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) and TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). For more information on these programs and to determine eligibility, visit the Virginia Department of Social Services.
